Breaking: Court Refuses To Grant Yahaya Bello Bail

Justice Maryann Anenih of the Federal Capital Territory High Court on Tuesday dismissed the bail application filed by the embattled former Kogi State Governor, Yahaya Bello.

The judge held in a ruling that as of November 22, 2024, when the application was filed, the former governor was not in custody and that since he was not in custody, the conditions for filing the application had not been met.

Justice Anennih held, “Bail is a challenge to detention. Why was the application filed when the first defendant was not in custody? The implication is that the court’s jurisdiction was invoked too early.

The application was filed when the necessary circumstances were absent, making it prematurely filed.”

The court agrees with the prosecution that the motion was incompetent. Therefore, the motion for bail filed by the first defendant is struck out.”

The Economic and Financial Crimes Commission counsel, Dr Kemi Pinheiro (SAN) strongly opposed the bail application, citing concerns that the former governor has been elusive.
