Court Remands Alleged Drunk Driver In Prison For Manslaughter

Justice Oyindamola Ogala of the Lagos State High Court sitting in Ikeja on Wednesday remanded a driver, Ajayi Lekan, who allegedly went on a frolic with his master’s Toyota car while drunk, causing the death of a passer-by, in prison.

Lekan was arraigned before the court on a one-count charge of manslaughter by the Lagos State government.

The prosecutor alleged that the offence was committed on or about the 20th September 2021, at about 21.30hrs, around Super Alimosho, Lagos, within the Ikeja Judicial Division, while drunk.

Ajayi Lekan was further accused of taken the key of a Toyota Tacoma with Registration Number KSF623GD belonging to his boss, drove it dangerously and recklessly and consequently knocked down one Nwabueze Christian (M) at Omiata Abule-Egba.

The prosecutor claimed that the defendant committed involuntary manslaughter Contrary to Section 224 of the Criminal Laws of Lagos State, 2015.

The defendant, however, pleaded not guilty to the charge.

The judge has adjourned the matter to April 13 for trial.

If found guilty, he risks a three-year jail term.
