Members of the Lagos State House of Assembly have impeached Speaker Mudashiru Obasa over allegations of abuse of office and gross misconduct.
The lawmakers have since elected Mojisola Meranda, the lawmaker representing Apapa 1 Constituency, as the new speaker.
The lawmakers also removed the Clerk of the House, Olalekan Onafeko.

In response to the impeachment, armed personnel from the Rapid Response Squad (RRS), the Lagos Task Force, and the police have taken control of the assembly premises and surrounding areas.
They have prevented motorists and others from gaining access to the location.
Obasa was impeached in a manner described as reminiscent of a “Gestapo” approach, and his former deputy, Mojisola Meranda-Lasbat, has been appointed as the new substantive Speaker.
Onafeko was reportedly brought into the assembly solely by Obasa, and both had previously banned journalists from covering the assembly’s activities.
During this turmoil, miscreants attempting to invade the complex were intercepted and arrested by security personnel, who placed them into waiting police vans.
Charms and amulets were recovered from these individuals, believed to be supporters of Obasa from Agege.
